In July, NBA Greats and Carver High School alums Terry Cummings and Tim Hardaway hosted a 3-Day Basketball Camp for young athletes on Chicago’s south side.
The camp was held from July 17 through July 19 at Chicago Carver Military Academy.
“I’m proud to be from the southside of Chicago, to have represented the southside of Chicago as a professional player in the NBA for 18 years. This camp gave a lot to the community and to Altgeld. Since the inception of the camp 20-plus years ago, we have serviced over 15,000 kids. We couldn’t be prouder!” said NBA Great, NBA Hall of Fame Nominee & Chicago native Terry Cummings.
According to a Tee Foxx press release, the camp featured athletes ages 10-17 who participated in drills, skills, and other competitions.
During the activities, Carver Military Academy also retired Cummings’ basketball jersey, one of the highest honors at the school.
Cummings said he was humbled to receive such a prestigious honor.
“I am overwhelmed. Carver served as the foundation for my basketball career, which was so good to me, and was a career that allowed me to take care of myself and my family. It was all for them. I’m deeply honored.”
In a past story with the Crusader, Cummings revealed in his bio that he actually wanted to be a professional hockey player growing up and had not attempted playing competitive basketball until he experienced an unexpected high school growth-spurt. Cummings shared that around the age of 16, his love for the game of basketball began to grow.
Cummings and his wife have three sons, Antonio, T. J., and Shawn. He has been an ordained Pentecostal Minister since 1977 and performed service at the wedding of former teammate Sean Elliott. On April 4, 1985, Cummings sang the national anthem in Milwaukee before playing in a home game versus the Detroit Pistons. He received a standing ovation from the crowd.
Cummings’ Legendary Basketball Career:
Cummings’ first stop as a basketball player was at Carver High School in Chicago. He played his college career at DePaul University, located in the city as well. During his 18 seasons as a professional basketball player Cummings played for several teams in the NBA, including the San Diego Clippers (1982–1984), Milwaukee Bucks (1984–1989, 1996), San Antonio Spurs (1989–1995), Seattle SuperSonics (1996–1997), Philadelphia 76ers (1997–1998), New York Knicks (1998), and the Golden State Warriors (1999– 2000). His 84-85 Bucks team was featured in the NBA 2K video game series.
